I am a born-and-raised Calgarian and a passionate Criminal Defence Lawyer with 15+ years of experience defending thousands of people across Western Canada. I have appeared at all levels of court and handled matters ranging from less serious charges to highly complex allegations. Through that experience, I have developed the courtroom presence, judgment, and practical insight needed to guide clients through some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

I revitalized my practice with a clear purpose: to provide a full answer and Defence while recognizing that criminal allegations do not happen in a vacuum. Wellness, family dynamics, mental health, addiction, trauma, and life’s broader challenges can all affect how a case unfolds and how a person experiences the justice system. I approach those realities with compassion and understanding, while maintaining the objectivity, preparation, and strategic focus needed to defend a case vigorously.

My role is to help clients through this process with clarity and honesty. That means carefully reviewing your version of events alongside the anticipated evidence, scrutinizing disclosure, assessing Crown negotiations, and preparing thoroughly for either trial or resolution. No matter how major or minor the charge, I work to build a defence that reflects your unique circumstances and protects your rights at every stage.

2007 Bachelor of Arts in Political Science

Earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Calgary

During law school, Ryan built a strong foundation in criminal advocacy through work with senior Crown Prosecutors in Winnipeg, excelling in Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, and Moot Court, and leading student lawyers at the University of Manitoba Legal Aid Centre, where he conducted hundreds of client interviews and gained hands-on experience in bail hearings, sentencing hearings, trials, Constitutional challenges, and negotiated resolutions.

2012 Law Degree & Early Practice

Obtained a Law Degree from the University of Manitoba. Returned to Calgary and joined a leading Alberta criminal defence firm.

From the outset of practice, Ryan focused on complex trial preparation, Charter litigation, and hands-on courtroom advocacy, including assisting on a homicide trial while articling and appearing before the Alberta Court of Appeal shortly after being called to the Bar.

2018 Founded Patmore Criminal Defence.

In 2018, Ryan established Patmore Criminal Defence to deliver the calibre of advocacy, preparation, and personalized representation that clients deserve when facing criminal allegations. Today, the firm is recognized for its meticulous approach to every case, practical legal advice, and unwavering commitment to achieving the best possible outcome for each client.

Assault with a Weapon

2026 Case: R v. AB, 2026

The client was charged with Assault Causing Bodily Harm after allegedly intentionally striking the complainant with an industrial emulsifier blender, causing serious injuries. Given the nature of the allegations and the severity of the injuries, the client faced the very real possibility of a significant custodial sentence and a permanent criminal record.

Although the prosecution’s case appeared strong at first glance, Patmore Criminal Defence identified critical evidentiary weaknesses and inconsistencies that undermined the reliability of the allegations. Through meticulous trial preparation, strategic cross-examination, and a focused defence, reasonable doubt was established, resulting in the client’s complete acquittal on all charges.

Dangerous Driving and Mischief

R. v. LT, 2026

Charged with Dangerous Driving and Mischief Over $5,000 after driving through the front entrance of a retail department store during a drug-induced incident, the client faced the prospect of jail and a permanent criminal record. Through strategic advocacy, comprehensive rehabilitation efforts, and persuasive sentencing submissions, Patmore Criminal Defence secured a Conditional Discharge, allowing the client to avoid a criminal conviction and move forward with a second chance.

Airdrie Court of Justice

Domestic Assault

R. v. F. M.

The client was charged with domestic assault and uttering threats. After lengthy discussions with the Crown about the unlikelihood of a conviction, the Crown agreed, and the charges were withdrawn.

Calgary Provincial Court

Possession for the purpose of trafficking

R. v. R. F.

The client was charged with possession for the purposes of trafficking after the RCMP executed a search warrant on a dwelling house that revealed large quantities of cocaine. The client had numerous outstanding warrants for failing to appear in court and breaches. Mr. Patmore successfully negotiated his client’s release with the Crown prosecutor on very minimal conditions.
